It's all action around Rekero Camp. Large herds of zebra have started moving into the Masai Mara Game Reserve this last week and there have been a lot of river crossings with some very dramatic inter-reaction between the zebra and crocodiles. We recently watched a group of zebra cross the Mara River and a big stallion was caught on the rump mid stream. He appeared to be targeting his bites on the crocodiles' eyes and successfully managed to force the croc to let him go. The wildebeest are not normally so clever and it was an interesting experience to witness.
The zebra always precede the wildebeest but we are expecting wildebeest crossings to start taking place shortly. There is no shortage of lions at the moment and between three of our vehicles yesterday in camp five leopard were seen, all in the riverine forest areas. We have also had many cheetah sightings from both locations, a female with four, one month old cubs in Camp yesterday and today at the cottages clients witnessed two female cheetah trying to kill a young Eland calf. They were eventually driven off by the eland mother, the calf returning to her seemingly none the worse for wear.
We have had some seasonal grass rains on Koyaki and in the Game Reserve itself over the last few days which will trigger the wildebeest crossings.
Rekero Tented Camp is currently ideally placed to see these crossings and last year we had thousands of zebra and wildebeest crossing the Talek 200 yards in front of the dining area.
Sightings of the Migration will be particularly good in July and August in the Mara Game Reserve around Rekero Tented Camp and in September on Koyaki close to Rekero Cottages.
The BBC Big Cat Diary crew are here again this year for six weeks, so you should be able to see some interesting footage soon on TV.
Best regards from the Rekero Team.
