A Beat about the Bush

News from Rekero Tented Camp, Masai Mara, Kenya

The last week in the Masai Mara has been truly amazing, a show that is as spectacular as it gets.

On Monday a male lion ambushed a topi 100 metres in front of Rekero Tented Camp causing a quick evacuation of the area around the dining tent and then ate it in full view of the lunch table that afternoon. The following day we had a repeat performance as the lion had lost the remains of his kill during the night.

The week has produced some spectacular wildebeest crossings daily in front of the tented camp on the Talek river mainly again during lunch and the last two days some massive crossings on the main river with thousands of animals fording and massive pile ups with a lot of young animals drowning. The lions, vultures and everyone else are orged and can hardly walk or fly in this time of plenty. This is one of the finest migrations of many years.

Ron was on a walk up at the Rekero Cottages with guests this morning and came across a group of Baboons that appeared to be having a territorial dispute with another troop. The noise had attracted a lioness, suddenly in the mayhem a young baboon fell out of a tall tree and stunned itself, before the lion could catch it, a large dog baboon picked it up and appeared to be tossing it around and into the air, then carried it off and started to dismember it and eat it. I have never experienced this unusual behaviour with baboons although we do regularly see them stealing young Impala fawns and eating them. I would be interested to know if anyone else has witnessed cannibalims amongst baboons.

Ron is busy planning another Omo River expedition for August 2003 which will comprise of 15 days on the river and visiting the Hammer bulljumping ceremonies in the Hammer Koki mountains, before exiting Ethiopia at Omo Rate by boat and into Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya. This expedition will end up in the Masai Mara at Rekero Tented Camp during the migration in September 2003. The Expedition Itinerary will be posted on our web site in about 6 weeks.
